Foot and Mouth Disease, The AVIS
Multimedia Suite: Release Announcement
2 March 1999
Announcing the release of the complete suite of computer-based
multimedia programs on Foot and Mouth Disease, now
available for purchase.
The AVIS Partenariat is pleased to announce the full
release of its milestone suite of programs on Foot and Mouth
Disease (FMD). AVIS the
Advanced Veterinary Information
System has now established itself as the multimedia
tool of choice for veterinary professionals and key staff in animal
health and production world-wide. With the explosive growth in demand
for multimedia computing as a management information and training
resource, but with ever-louder expressions of concern about quality
and accuracy of information, FMD sets the benchmark
standard in its field.
The FMD Modules
FMD consists of five multimedia modules,
a general Overview, and four specialist modules
Clinical Disease & Diagnosis, Laboratory
Diagnosis, Epidemiology and Control.
Each is targeted at the key stakeholders in the understanding, prevention
and management of this major, economically devastating disease:
veterinary clinicians and researchers, field personnel and extension
service workers, livestock producers and veterinarians tasked with
management and control.
Written by the staff of the World Reference Laboratory
for FMD at the Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright,
UK, and endorsed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)
and the Office International des Épizooties (OIE),
this is the first time a fully validated comprehensive approach
to FMD has been offered in multimedia form.
Easy to Install and Use
The modules are easy to install from diskette or CD-ROM
and key components may also be downloaded through the Internet.
There is extensive, state of the art information about the disease
itself and a standardised, fully referenced approach to vaccination
policy, management and effective control. There is rapid access
to key documents, tools and techniques and a rich array of visual
materials, such as photos, maps and animations make the program
an ideal reference and training resource.
Decision Support and Reference
For the decision-maker, FMD aids prompt
and effective intervention based on standardised, state of the art
"best practice". For the field and laboratory specialist
an array of tools and techniques, such as diagnostic checklists
and details on vaccines are available at a click of the mouse. Students
have a modern and attractive way of learning about the disease in
the context of an efficient approach to livestock production. In
the age of the portable laptop computer, the programs are available
in the office, or on the move.
The AVIS Partenariat
The AVIS Partenariat was founded in 1992 to create
a unique multimedia approach to understanding and managing key challenges
in animal health, especially those caused by the OIE List A diseases.
Its members are FAO, OIE, IAH Pirbright and Compton, and Telos ALEFF
Ltd. AVIS has already released major programs on Rinderpest
and Newcastle Disease; CBPP and Rabies
will be released in the coming year.
