The FMD viral genome consists of a single strand of positive sense RNA of approximately 8,000 nucleotide bases. The RNA is initially translated as a single polypeptide which is subsequently cleaved by viral-encoded proteases to produce the structural and non-structural proteins depicted in the genome map.
