Surveillance Zone - Movement of animals within the surveillance zone is permitted only under licence and usually only directly to slaughter at an approved slaughter house within the Surveillance Zone. No movements from premises identified as being 'at risk'.

Protection Zone - No movement of animals permitted. All holdings containing animals regularly visited to check for clinical signs of FMD. Controls reviewed 28 days after slaughter and disinfection on the IP.

IP - Infected Premises - All stock slaughtered and destroyed as quickly as possible.

A wider 'Infected Area' may sometimes be declared if several outbreaks occur within an area. Animals' movements out of the Infected Area are only allowed under licence
