Under appropriate conditions, FMD can be eradicated by a policy of 'stamping out' alone, as was achieved in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland and Greece. In the other Member States, annual prophylactic vaccination of cattle was combined with a slaughter and ring vaccination policy in the event of outbreaks to eradicate the virus and the disease.
