Control of Animal Movement

Checkpoints

These include border control points and checkpoints at the border between zones of differing status with regard to FMD.

Movements into and out of control zones are usually by means of permits issued by the veterinary authorities. Granting or refusing permission to move will depend on a risk assessment taking into account.

  • the item being moved - animal, animal product, vehicle, item or person.

  • the FMD status of the origin and destination.

  • vaccination history.

Checkpoints must be situated on all entry and exit points and must be manned by suitably trained staff. These could be veterinarians, animal health officers, administrators or even military personnel.

Compliance with certification is essential and it is usual to include disinfection at the point of entry/exit to a control zone.
