Buffer Zones

Theoretical Basis of a Buffer
Zone
|
|
Buffer zones consist of regions of vaccination and control of animal movement
between areas of differing FMD status designed to prevent the introduction
of FMD from infected to free areas. Buffer zones have been used effectively
to prevent spread of FMD between countries and between infected and free
zones within countries. Buffer zones are only effective if movement of
animals can be adequately controlled. A buffer zone relying on vaccination
alone will fail.
Buffer zones are usually combined with check points, quarantine stations
and fences to effectively prevent incursions of FMD.
