FMD Control Policies
|
|
FMD is classified by the Office International des Épizooties (OIE) as
a List A disease. Member countries identifying or suspecting the disease
on their territory are therefore obliged to notify the OIE without delay.
The World Trade Organisation (WTO) through GATT requires that trade in
animals and their products is not unnecessarily prevented. The OIE has
been charged with the responsibility of advising the WTO on animal health
issues that impact on free trade. The OIE International Animal Health
Code recognises six FMD 'states' for the purposes of international trade
in livestock and livestock products. Full details, in the form of the
definitive text of the OIE 'Code,' are available by downloading the program
HANDISTATUS from the OIE Web site at http://www.OIE.int.
