In an infected country with a free zone (with or without vaccination) and separated by a
buffer/surveillance zone or physical or geographical barrier that prevents escape of
infection, susceptible animals can only leave infected areas for immediate slaughter
locally in an abattoir within the buffer zone. Animals can be slaughtered at abattoirs
in free zones under rigorous control measures, and may enter free zones for other
purposes after quarantine and proof of freedom from infection.
Many of the developed regions of the world have achieved FMD-free status
which affords them privileged trading conditions for livestock and their
products.
