The North American Vaccine Bank (NAFMDVB) began life in 1980 as an antigen store on Plum Island, New York State, USA, for the use of the USA, which had been FMD-free since 1929.
In 1982 Mexico and Canada, who had been free of FMD since 1954 and 1952, respectively, joined the Bank. The NAFMDVB currently holds 2.5 million doses of three strains of FMDV, and intends over the next 10 years to expand to seven strains of antigen, to be held in -80ºC freezers. Activities will be confined to the three members, although assistance may be offered to regional trading partners if FMD is a threat to the members.
