Economic Consequences

Meat Animals

The consequences of FMD in meat animals are more insidious than in dairy animals and result in lower rates of live-weight gain. Depending on the species and breed affected, individuals will often require 10 to 20% longer to reach maturity. As an example, this would mean that affected 3-year-old beef cattle would need an additional 3-6 months of feeding and maintenance to reach the maturity of unaffected 3-year-olds. In the case of fattening pigs, growth may be retarded for 1-2 months and British data predict a reduction of 20% per annum in pig meat production under endemic conditions.
