Dairy cattle often suffer an immediate 50 to 60% loss of milk production, due to infection of the glandular epithelium, which is not recovered for the remainder of the lactation period. This equates to an average loss of 25% throughout a given lactation. In addition, the udder may develop secondary infections and mastitis, leading to a permanent partial or total loss of milk production. Consequently, FMD in dairy cattle affects not only short and medium term milk productivity but often leads to the need to cull prematurely.
