Mortality rates of up to 50% are frequently observed and may even approach 100% in young lambs and piglets during an outbreak. This is due particularly to the specific pathology of FMD in young animals in which the heart muscle is infected. The immediate effects of the disease are often compounded by problems associated with suckling from the painful teats of infected dams. |
