Differential Diagnosis

Sheep and Goats - Mouth and/or Nares

 

Bluetongue

 

Presence of high fever (40.5 - 41ºC), excess salivation, hyperaemia of buccal and nasal mucosae. Nasal discharge followed by crustation around the nares. Swelling and oedema of lips, gums, dental pad and tongue. Excoriation of the buccal mucosa and ulceration of the commissures of the lips. Facial swelling and loss of condition. Case mortality rate very variable and occurs across a wide age range.

Differentiated from FMD by the absence of vesicular lesions, and high mortality restricted to lambs.
