Differential Diagnosis

Cattle - Mouth and/or Nares

 

Necrotic Stomatitis

 

Presence of moderate fever (39.5-40ºC), depression, anorexia. Foetid breath and drooling saliva. Deep ulcer in the mucosa of the cheek which is often filled with a mixture of food particles and necrotic material. There may also be an ulcer on the adjacent side of the tongue. Swelling of the tongue and the affected cheek. Generally involves calves between 2 weeks to 3 months of age and there is a low group morbidity rate.

Differentiated from FMD by the absence of vesicular and erosive lesions, mucopurulent nasal discharge, high fever, high morbidity in cattle of all ages and lameness.
