Differential Diagnosis

Cattle - Mouth and/or Nares

Rinderpest

Presence of high fever, anorexia, depression, fall in milk production in dairy cows, eye discharge, excess salivation, erosions in and around the mouth, foetid breath, diarrhoea with blood-stained faeces, severe dehydration, coughing and prostration. High morbidity and mortality rates.

These are the typical signs seen in animals infected by virulent strains of rinderpest virus. The signs will be much milder and some may be absent with less virulent strains.

Differentiated from FMD by the absence of vesicular lesions and lameness.
