Control and eradication

Control

Routine prophylactic vaccination

  • Reduces the incidence and prevalence of outbreaks of FMD by raising the immunity level of the national herd.

  • It is generally considered that approximately 85% of the susceptible population must be immune to prevent the spread of FMD.

  • In Europe, the routine, mass vaccination of cattle played a major role in the control of FMD.

  • Vaccination alone will not eradicate FMD virus.

  • When combined with a slaughter policy and movement control, vaccination can be important in eradicating FMD virus.

  • Requires consistent, potent and safe vaccines.
