Carrier state in FMD - Cattle |
||||
|
Virus has been recovered from cattle for at least 2 years following experimental infection. There is circumstantial evidence from the field that some breeds of cattle can carry the virus for at least 3 years. The proportion of animals continuing to harbour the virus decreases with time after exposure to infection and is usually about 50 % when measured 6 months after infection. Virus excretion into the oropharynx is intermittent and becomes less frequent with time. The titre of virus in oropharyngeal fluid also decreases with time.
