Carrier state in FMD - Buffalo |
||||
|
African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) are thought to be lifelong carriers of FMD virus after exposure to infection. Persistent infection of wild buffalo in Southern African with the SAT serotypes is well recognised. Animals can be simultaneously infected with more than one SAT serotype. Indirect evidence of transmission between wild buffalo and domestic cattle has been reported. The carrier status of the Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is unknown.
