Movement Restrictions in FMD
|
|
Epidemiological analyses have demonstrated that farms adjacent or close
to infected premises are at greater risk of becoming infected with FMD
than more distant premises. This is due to the factors grouped together
as 'local spread' which include physical contact across fences, indirect
spread through fomites and short range aerosol transmission. To minimise
risk due to 'local spread' a Protection Zone is established. The Protection
Zone does not usually have natural geographic boundaries but extends to
include all of the land of all of the farms whose land is 3 km or less
from the IP. The following rules are applied:
• no movement of susceptible animals.
• disinfection of all vehicles entering and leaving farms.
• artificial insemination prohibited
• meat and milk must be treated to inactivate FMD (as described in the OIE code) or
destroyed on the farm of origin
• a census is carried out of all susceptible animals.
Restrictions remain in force until at least 15 days after initial cleaning and
disinfection of the IP. The restrictions applicable in the Surveillance Zone then
apply until too these are lifted.
